Ship Rock Layover and the inaugural Alex Schechtmeyster Memorial Race (return from Catalina)

We had a strong turn out for the final race(s) of our Dave Wall summer series. We had 22 boats at PV 10 for the start of our Ship Rock Layover race, and 12 at the start of our inaugural return race, The Alex Schechtmeyster Memorial Race .

We started the Ship Rock Race with fairly light wind, but about half way over the wind came up and we all had a fun sail and a strong finish. Though Covid-19 restrictions prevented us from gathering at our Annual BBQ on the island, we made the best of it by socially distanced dinghy and swimming visits between boats. It was so nice to see everyone after so many months of everything being virtual.

The start of the Alex Schechtmeyster Memorial Race was almost comical, because the wind was so light that the fleet was barely moving. That, coupled with Cassiopeia serving as our “pin” (aka: sitting duck), provided for an adventurous, albeit slow motion start. We only had 3 boats out of 12 finish due to light wind, but all reported a beautiful day on the water nonetheless!
